Architect Austin Allen

Austin Allen was one of the leading architects in Joplin during the early 20th century, Austin Allen figures prominently in Joplin’s history. The Arts and Crafts movement heavily influenced Allen when he designed his home in 1905, for it clearly reflects the movement’s principals beautiful materials and honest craftsmanship. The use of rugged wood shingle porch supports, rather than pristine classical columns express the movement’s preference for natural materials. Also, the porch is an integral part of the house, not an ornamental addition.
