William Tingle was an early Jasper County settler associated with the first lead-mining activity in the Joplin area. Public history sources place early galena discoveries on or near Tingle's farm, northwest of present-day Joplin in the Turkey Creek Valley, during the late 1840s.
The discovery of lead on Tingle-related land belongs to the earliest chapter of the mining story that later made Joplin nationally known. Historic marker accounts describe lead discovered while David Campbell was visiting William Tingle in 1849, and other local histories remember Tingle as one of the first settlers connected to lead mining before the post-Civil War mining boom.
