Story
Before Charles Schifferdecker became known as a mining investor, banker, and philanthropist, he built his livelihood in Joplin’s brewing trade. Around 1876 he established the Turkey Creek Brewery on the banks of Turkey Creek in north Joplin. The creekside property became more than a production site: it developed into beer and picnic gardens where residents gathered for refreshments and recreation.
The grounds offered a raised dancing platform, open lawn-bowling areas, and shady walks beside the creek. A cave next to the residence remained naturally cool and provided practical storage for beer before mechanical refrigeration. Together, the brewery, garden, residence, cave, and landscape show how immigrant traditions shaped social life in Joplin’s mining-boom years.
Schifferdecker later left the brewing business and built the Romanesque residence at 422 South Sergeant Avenue. His business success helped fund civic institutions and philanthropy, while the surviving Turkey Creek property preserves the setting where his Joplin career began. The beer-garden property is now a private residence; please respect the owners and view it only from public routes unless invited.
