Historic Murphysburg Treasure Hunt to Offer $1,000 Grand Prize
JOPLIN, MO — The Murphysburg Preservation Society is thrilled to announce a new and exciting community event coming this summer: the Murphysburg Treasure Hunt, a race to solve riddles, uncover clues and explore Joplin’s rich history. Scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, 2025, the event promises to take participants on a thrilling adventure through some of Joplin’s most historic locations. The first person to complete the treasure hunt will walk away with a grand prize of $1,000.
The Murphysburg Treasure Hunt is designed to be more than just a game. It’s an interactive experience that encourages participants to engage with Joplin’s fascinating past in a unique and exciting way. At the start of the event, participants will receive their first riddle, leading them to a historic landmark somewhere in Joplin. Once they arrive at the correct location, they will find a QR code. Scanning the code will unlock their next clue, taking them further along the treasure trail. The race continues until someone solves all the clues, reaches the final destination, and claims the prize.
This event is the first of its kind in Joplin, blending local history with an engaging challenge that will appeal to residents and visitors alike. “We wanted to create something that brings people together and showcases the historic treasures of our community,” said Paula Callihan, a representative of the Murphysburg Preservation Society. “The Murphysburg Treasure Hunt is a great way to celebrate Joplin’s past while having fun and supporting preservation efforts.”
Participants won’t know which locations are part of the treasure hunt until they solve the riddles. This element of surprise adds to the excitement and mystery, creating a race that rewards both knowledge and quick thinking. The hunt will feature ten historical sites throughout the city, each tied to significant events and stories from Joplin’s early days. From grand buildings that symbolize the city’s prosperity during the mining boom to locations linked to infamous figures, the treasure hunt will provide participants with a glimpse into Joplin’s colorful history.
The treasure hunt is open to participants of all ages, and the entry fee is $25 per person. All registration proceeds will go directly to the Historic Murphysburg Preservation, Inc. to support its ongoing work in preserving Joplin’s historic architecture and cultural heritage. Participants can register online at Murphysburg.org.
